Thai (ไทย) is a Tai language (Kra-Dai family), spoken in Thailand. It is written in the Thai script: consonants carry vowel signs written above, below, before or after them, and words are not separated by spaces.
English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
How Thai and English compare
- Thai is written in the Thai script and English in the Latin alphabet, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Thai and English come from different language families (Tai and Germanic), so most words have no shared root.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–verb–object, which keeps sentences close in shape.
- Thai is written without spaces between words; spaces mark the ends of phrases or sentences.
