English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
Telugu (తెలుగు) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is written in the Telugu script: its letters are round, and a consonant joining the next one is written as a small form below it (vattu). About 8.1 crore (81 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How English and Telugu compare
- English is written in the Latin alphabet and Telugu in the Telugu script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- English and Telugu come from different language families (Germanic and Dravidian), so most words have no shared root.
- English usually puts words in the order subject–verb–object; Telugu uses subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, so sentences are reordered in translation.
