Bombay High Court Exam Details

Introduction

The High Court of Bombay is a chartered High Court and one of the oldest High Courts in the country. It has appellate jurisdiction over the State of Maharashtra, Goa, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. In addition to the principal seat at Bombay, it has benches at Aurangabad, Nagpur and Panaji (Goa).

The Bombay High Court published its recruitment advertisement on 4 December 2023. The first stage of selection has been conducted and the district-wise results have been declared.

The exam was conducted for the Stenographer (Grade-3), Junior Clerk and Peon/Hamal posts. Below are the criteria and the next stages of the exam.

Examination scheme

Examination criteria for Stenographer (Grade-3)

1. If the Screening Test for Stenographer (Grade-3) is not conducted, all eligible candidates will be called for the Shorthand Tests described below.
2. If a Screening Test is conducted (on par with the Screening Test for Junior Clerk), candidates who secure the cut-off marks, equal to seven times the number of posts advertised, will be called for the Shorthand Tests strictly on merit. If more than one candidate has the same marks as the last candidate shortlisted to maintain the ratio 1:7, all such candidates will be called for the Shorthand Tests.

   

3. After securing the cut-off marks in the Shorthand Tests, candidates must appear for the Marathi Typing Test carrying 20 marks, with 300 words to be typed within 10 minutes (30 w.p.m.) on computers.
4. Only candidates who obtain the cut-off marks in the Marathi Typing Test are eligible to appear for the English Typing Test.
5. The English Typing Test carries 20 marks, with 400 words to be typed within 10 minutes (40 w.p.m.) on computers.
6. Only candidates who obtain the cut-off marks in the English Typing Test are eligible for the interview.
7. After each test, the list of candidates eligible for the next test will be displayed on the notice board of the concerned District Courts and on the official websites of the concerned District Courts and the High Court.
8. Candidates equal to 3 times the number of posts advertised, based on the total marks obtained in the Screening Test (if conducted), English Shorthand Test, Marathi Shorthand Test, Marathi Typing Test and English Typing Test, will be called for the interview strictly on merit. If more than one candidate has the same marks as the last candidate shortlisted to maintain the ratio 1:3, all such candidates will be called for the interview.

Examination criteria for Junior Clerk

1. After securing the cut-off marks in the Screening Test, candidates equal to seven times the number of posts advertised will be called, strictly on merit, for the Marathi Typing Test carrying 20 marks, with 300 words to be typed within 10 minutes (30 w.p.m.) on computers. If more than one candidate has the same marks as the last candidate shortlisted to maintain the ratio 1:7, all such candidates will be called for the Marathi Typing Test.

If more than one candidate has the same marks as the last candidate shortlisted to maintain the ratio 1:7, all such candidates will be called for the Cleaning & Activeness Test.
2. Only candidates who obtain the cut-off marks in the Cleaning & Activeness Test are eligible for the interview.
3. After each test, the list of candidates eligible for the next test will be displayed on the notice board of the concerned District Courts and on the official websites of the concerned District Courts and the High Court.
4. Candidates equal to 3 times the number of posts advertised, based on the total marks obtained in the Screening Test and the Cleaning & Activeness Test, will be called for the interview strictly on merit. If more than one candidate has the same marks as the last candidate shortlisted to maintain the ratio 1:3, all such candidates will be called for the interview.

Passing marks for each test

For the Screening Test, Shorthand Test, Typing Test, Cleaning & Activeness Test and Interview, for the posts of Stenographer (Grade-3), Junior Clerk and Peon/Hamal, the passing marks are 35% for the General category, with a relaxation of 5% for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes or Special Backward Classes as specified by the Government.

Qualifications

Stenographer (Grade-3)

To be eligible, a candidate:

1. Must hold a degree from any recognised university (preference will be given to candidates with a degree in Law).
2. Must have adequate knowledge of the regional language of the court in the district.
3. Must have passed the Government Commercial Certificate Examination, or an examination conducted by a Government Board, or the Government Certificate in Computer Typing Basic Course (GCC-TBC or I.T.I.) with a speed of:
   • 100 w.p.m. or above in English Shorthand and 80 w.p.m. or above in Marathi Shorthand, and
   • 40 w.p.m. or above in English Typing and 30 w.p.m. or above in Marathi Typing.
4. Must have a computer certificate showing proficiency in word processing on Windows and Linux, in addition to MS Office, MS Word, WordStar-7 and OpenOffice.org, from any of the following institutes:
   • Statutory universities in the State of Maharashtra or Goa, as the case may be.
   • Maharashtra or Goa State Board of Technical Education, as the case may be.
   • NIC, DOEACC, APTECH, NIIT, C-DAC, DATAPRO, SSI, BOSTON, CEDIT, MS-CIT.
   • Certificate of computer knowledge issued by the Government of Maharashtra or Goa, as the case may be.

Junior Clerk

To be eligible, a candidate:

1. Must hold a degree from any recognised university (preference will be given to candidates with a degree in Law).
2. Must have adequate knowledge of the regional language of the court in the district.

A candidate must have passed at least the 7th standard examination and must have a good physique.
