Tamil (தமிழ்) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and also Sri Lanka and Singapore, where it is an official language. It is written in the Tamil script: it has 12 vowels and 18 consonants, and a dot above a consonant (pulli) shows that it has no vowel. About 6.9 crore (69 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
How Tamil and English compare
- Tamil is written in the Tamil script and English in the Latin alphabet, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Tamil and English come from different language families (Dravidian and Germanic), so most words have no shared root.
- Tamil usually puts words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end; English uses subject–verb–object, so sentences are reordered in translation.
