Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Urdu (اردو) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in many parts of India, where several states give it official status, and Pakistan, where it is the national language. It is written in the Perso-Arabic script: it is written right to left, letters join each other, and short vowels are usually not written. About 5.1 crore (51 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Malayalam and Urdu compare
- Malayalam is written in the Malayalam script and Urdu in the Perso-Arabic script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Urdu is written from right to left, so the result runs in the opposite direction to Malayalam.
- Malayalam is Dravidian and Urdu is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
