Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Hindi (हिंदी) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in northern and central India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi; it is the official language of the Union government. It is written in Devanagari: each consonant carries a built-in "a" sound, other vowels are added as signs (matras), and a line across the top (shirorekha) joins the letters of a word. About 52.8 crore (528 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Malayalam and Hindi compare
- Malayalam is written in the Malayalam script and Hindi in Devanagari, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Malayalam is Dravidian and Hindi is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
