Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Punjab in India (written in Gurmukhi) and Punjab in Pakistan (written in the Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi script). It is written in Gurmukhi: it has 35 basic letters (paintee), a line across the top, and vowel signs added to consonants. About 3.3 crore (33 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Urdu (اردو) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in many parts of India, where several states give it official status, and Pakistan, where it is the national language. It is written in the Perso-Arabic script: it is written right to left, letters join each other, and short vowels are usually not written. About 5.1 crore (51 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Punjabi and Urdu compare
- Punjabi is written in Gurmukhi and Urdu in the Perso-Arabic script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Urdu is written from right to left, so the result runs in the opposite direction to Punjabi.
- Both are Indo-Aryan languages, so they share many related words and similar grammar.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
- In Pakistan, Punjabi is written in Shahmukhi, the same Perso-Arabic script used for Urdu.
