Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Assamese (অসমীয়া) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Assam, where it is the official language. It is written in the Bengali–Assamese script: consonants carry a built-in vowel, vowel signs (kar) attach to them, and most letters hang from a line across the top. About 1.5 crore (15 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Malayalam and Assamese compare
- Malayalam is written in the Malayalam script and Assamese in the Bengali–Assamese script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Malayalam is Dravidian and Assamese is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
