Tamil (தமிழ்) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and also Sri Lanka and Singapore, where it is an official language. It is written in the Tamil script: it has 12 vowels and 18 consonants, and a dot above a consonant (pulli) shows that it has no vowel. About 6.9 crore (69 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Assamese (অসমীয়া) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Assam, where it is the official language. It is written in the Bengali–Assamese script: consonants carry a built-in vowel, vowel signs (kar) attach to them, and most letters hang from a line across the top. About 1.5 crore (15 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Tamil and Assamese compare
- Tamil is written in the Tamil script and Assamese in the Bengali–Assamese script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Tamil is Dravidian and Assamese is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
