Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Gujarat, where it is the official language, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It is written in the Gujarati script: it comes from the same family as Devanagari and works the same way, but has no line across the top of the letters. About 5.5 crore (55 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Gujarati and Malayalam compare
- Gujarati is written in the Gujarati script and Malayalam in the Malayalam script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Gujarati is Indo-Aryan and Malayalam is Dravidian: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
