Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Gujarat, where it is the official language, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. It is written in the Gujarati script: it comes from the same family as Devanagari and works the same way, but has no line across the top of the letters. About 5.5 crore (55 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Tamil (தமிழ்) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and also Sri Lanka and Singapore, where it is an official language. It is written in the Tamil script: it has 12 vowels and 18 consonants, and a dot above a consonant (pulli) shows that it has no vowel. About 6.9 crore (69 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Gujarati and Tamil compare
- Gujarati is written in the Gujarati script and Tamil in the Tamil script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Gujarati is Indo-Aryan and Tamil is Dravidian: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
