English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How English and Malayalam compare
- English is written in the Latin alphabet and Malayalam in the Malayalam script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- English and Malayalam come from different language families (Germanic and Dravidian), so most words have no shared root.
- English usually puts words in the order subject–verb–object; Malayalam uses subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, so sentences are reordered in translation.
