English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
Korean (한국어) is a Koreanic language, spoken in South Korea and North Korea. It is written in Hangul: an alphabet created in the 15th century whose letters are grouped into square syllable blocks.
How English and Korean compare
- English is written in the Latin alphabet and Korean in Hangul, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- English and Korean come from different language families (Germanic and Koreanic), so most words have no shared root.
- English usually puts words in the order subject–verb–object; Korean uses subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, so sentences are reordered in translation.
