English is a Germanic language (Indo-European family), spoken in countries around the world; in India it is used alongside Hindi for the official work of the Union government, in courts and in higher education. It is written in the Latin alphabet: an alphabet in which vowels and consonants are separate letters.
Arabic (العربية) is a Semitic language (Afro-Asiatic family), spoken in more than 20 countries across the Middle East and North Africa. It is written in the Arabic script: it is written right to left with 28 letters that join each other, and short vowels are usually not written.
How English and Arabic compare
- English is written in the Latin alphabet and Arabic in the Arabic script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Arabic is written from right to left, so the result runs in the opposite direction to English.
- English and Arabic come from different language families (Germanic and Semitic), so most words have no shared root.
- English usually puts words in the order subject–verb–object; Arabic uses verb–subject–object, with the verb first, so sentences are reordered in translation.
- Arabic is written right to left, while numbers are read left to right.
