Malayalam (മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language, from the language family of South India, spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep. It is written in the Malayalam script: its letters are round, and special letters (chillu) write a consonant with no vowel at the end of a syllable. About 3.5 crore (35 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) is an Indo-Aryan language (Indo-European family), descended from the same roots as Sanskrit, spoken in Odisha, where it is the official language. It is written in the Odia script: most letters have a rounded, umbrella-like curve on top. About 3.8 crore (38 million) people in India speak it as their first language (Census 2011).
How Malayalam and Odia compare
- Malayalam is written in the Malayalam script and Odia in the Odia script, so the translation changes the script as well as the words.
- Malayalam is Dravidian and Odia is Indo-Aryan: the grammar and most everyday words differ, although both use words that come from Sanskrit.
- Both usually put words in the order subject–object–verb, with the verb at the end, which keeps sentences close in shape.
